ASTEC EUROPE CD-ROM

Astec Europe - A major manufacturer and distributor of power supplies to the computer and other industries. Their products are technical in nature, therefore a lot of technical documentation has to be circulated to customers, distributors and staff worldwide. There are around 500 documents available in both paper-based and electronic Adobe PDF format, widely used for technical documentation. These pdf files were already available on an in-house CD, but users found it very difficult to locate the document they needed, tucked away in dozens of folders.

Emphasys were called in to help. Initial discussions focussed on the business problem, i.e. the difficulty in locating the required document, and how this could be made more intuitive. A CD was required that would look professional and get the user to the document he required as easily as possible. Also, Astec wanted the content of the CD to be replicated on the web as well.

The finished CD was a combination of multimedia introduction using DIRECTOR, then HTML to load the web browser and Adobe Acrobat to search and load documents. For simplicity, it was agreed to use the excellent search facilities inherent in Acrobat V4.

The project has been very well received, 20,000 CD's were produced and the website version can be seen at www.astec.co.uk
